How Long Can a Horse Go Without Food and Water, and Where the Usual Numbers Stop Working

A healthy adult horse at rest survives roughly three to five days without water and close to a month without food. Both of those figures are the wrong ones to manage by. Kentucky Equine Research puts the onset of colic signs and impaction at around 48 hours without water, and the European College of Equine Internal Medicine's consensus statement on gastric ulcer syndrome reports that forage gaps longer than six hours raise the risk of squamous gastric ulceration. A horse with water and no feed is on a clock measured in days. A horse without water is on a clock measured in hours, and 24 hours without confirmed access is the point to call a vet.

Two clocks, running at different speeds

Water leaves a horse continuously whether or not any comes in. Penn State Extension puts daily output for a 1,000-pound horse at about 31 pounds of feces and 2.4 gallons of urine; Rutgers Equine Science Center gives the same animal 35 to 50 pounds of wet manure across 4 to 13 piles. All of it has to be replaced; when it is not, gut contents dry and motility falls. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists limited access to drinking water as a direct cause of small colon impaction.

Feed runs on a different mechanism. The equine stomach secretes acid whether or not there is anything to digest, and its upper squamous portion has no mucus layer. Murray's 1994 feed-deprivation model, still the standard method for inducing equine gastric ulcers, produced squamous ulceration in nine of ten horses without ever withholding hay for more than 24 hours at a stretch. An empty stomach is an active injury at a low hourly rate.

The six numbers that turn "how long" into an answer

How long this horse can go depends on six quantities, five recordable without touching the animal.

Manure moves first and costs nothing to read. Fewer, smaller or drier piles are a hydration signal available from the gate, hours before the horse's demeanour changes.

Around 2021 I stopped telling owners an automatic waterer was the safer choice, having given that advice for years because a waterer never runs dry and a bucket does. The second row of that table changed my mind: a waterer deletes the one number you can read without equipment. Buckets tell you the horse drank 24 litres. A full bowl tells you nothing, and a full bowl is exactly what an untouched bowl looks like.

The honest case against measuring any of this is that almost every feed interruption ends with nothing happening. A horse that misses a haynet with a full trough is in no danger, the USDA's NAHMS Equine 2015 study put annual equine mortality at 1.4 percent, and calling a vet over every skipped meal will exhaust that vet's patience. I grant it. For the first several hours the two cases look identical, and the difference shows in manure count and litres drunk before it shows in the horse.

How the numbers scale, and where the scaling fails

Scaling up is the easy half. Water requirement tracks body weight close to linearly, so 5 litres per 100 kg gives a 250 kg pony about 12 litres a day and a 700 kg draft horse about 35. Ambient temperature roughly doubles that between 20°C and 30°C, and at Iowa State's 10–12 litres of sweat an hour a horse in hard summer work sheds a full day's drinking in two. Feed moisture is the variable owners miss: pasture runs 60 to 80 percent moisture against under 15 percent for hay and grain, so a horse moved from grass to hay drinks the whole difference, heading into the season when it wants to drink least.

A pony is not a small horse

Body weight predicts water requirement. It does not predict starvation tolerance. The Merck Veterinary Manual identifies ponies, miniature horses and donkeys as the animals that develop hyperlipaemia in negative energy balance: fat mobilises faster than the liver can process it, and reported mortality runs 43 to 80 percent, falling to 0–33 percent with aggressive early treatment. The Donkey Sanctuary treats any donkey off its feed as an emergency. The clock that runs in days for a 500 kg gelding runs in hours for a 180 kg donkey.

The horse that needs water most drinks least

Equine sweat is hypertonic, carrying more electrolyte per litre than plasma. Heavy sweating removes salt alongside water, so plasma osmolality fails to climb as it would with pure water loss, and osmolality is the thirst signal. A horse can drop 10 litres in an hour of work, stand at a full trough and decline to drink. Electrolytes restore the drive; keep plain water beside the electrolyte bucket.

Present, unfrozen, and still not consumed

Kristula and McDonnell tested this in Applied Animal Behaviour Science in 1994. Fourteen ponies drank a mean of 40 percent more when water was warmed to an average of 66°F than when it sat at 32–34°F. A full, unfrozen trough at 1°C is a 40 percent cut in intake with nothing visibly wrong in the system.

I have never treated a colicking horse. I have never passed a nasogastric tube, and I cannot tell you from experience what 8 percent dehydration looks like from across a fence line. What I can vouch for is the lag. I spent several years filling domestic propane tanks on rural properties, and a stuck float valve, a split supply line or an iced trough does not announce itself. Those owners were not careless. They were reading a system by looking at it, and it had failed days before anyone looked.

Past a threshold, feed and water stop being treatment

UC Davis research led by Carolyn Stull found that concentrated calories given to a severely starved horse can trigger refeeding syndrome and death within three to five days. Water crosses the same line: a horse over 8 percent dehydrated needs intravenous fluids rather than a bucket.

Why "he looks fine" is not a measurement

The skin pinch is the test most owners reach for, and the peer-reviewed evidence for it is poor. Pritchard and colleagues, in the Equine Veterinary Journal in 2008, rehydrated 50 working horses and found no significant association between skin tent duration and either plasma osmolality or water intake. Tent duration shifted with age, body condition, which side was tested and whether the coat was damp. Their most reliable field indicator was the volume of water consumed and the length of drinking bouts.

I know that failure mode from the other end of my career. I cleared a domestic propane tank once on my nose alone: nothing to smell, nothing to report. A colleague found a weeping connection at that fitting the following week with leak-detection fluid. It cost me the only instrument I believed I was carrying. Odourant fades in a buried line, and it fades in a nose that has breathed it since the first drop of the shift, so the sniff test returns "nothing" in the safe case and the dangerous one alike. The skin pinch behaves identically, and a false negative from a test you trust is worse than no test, because it ends the investigation.

What to do in the first hour of an interruption

  1. Record the clock time you last confirmed water and forage.
  2. Count manure piles against that horse's 4-to-13 baseline, noting any that are dry, small or absent.
  3. Offer water in a vessel with a readable level, warmed to 68–95°F in cold conditions, and record the litres taken.
  4. Restore forage as four to six small portions a day, concentrates withheld.
  5. Call the vet at 24 hours without confirmed water, at absent manure, at any colic sign, or for a pony, miniature or donkey off its feed.

A vet will ask when the horse last drank, how much, when it last ate and when it last passed manure. Have those answers written down with times. Assessing the horse is the vet's job; the history is the part only you can supply.

What is the number-one killer of horses?

Colic. The USDA's NAHMS Equine 2015 study attributed 31.2 percent of deaths among equids aged one to twenty to colic, the largest single specified cause in that band. Among equids over twenty, old age ranked first and colic second at 13.4 percent. Impaction colic tracks water intake directly.

How can you rehydrate a horse quickly?
