How Much Does It Cost to Window Tint a Car? The Answer for Each Reason You're Asking

Window tinting a car costs $150 to $800 for a full sedan, and most drivers pay $250 to $600. That price covers film on seven panes: two front doors, two rear doors, two rear quarter windows, and the back glass. The windshield is not in it and adds $150 to $350. A panoramic roof adds $150 to $300. Stripping off old film adds $150 to $250 on a sedan and $200 to $400 on anything larger. Film type moves the total more than any other variable: dyed runs $150 to $300 installed, carbon $250 to $450, ceramic $400 to $800, and an SUV or truck adds 25 to 40 percent on top of whichever tier you pick.

What a "full car" quote actually covers

The trade counts a four-door sedan as seven panes: two front door windows, two rear door windows, two rear quarter windows, and the back glass. Precut-kit makers use the same count. Cars without rear quarter glass drop to five panes, and the quote should drop with them.

Three pieces of glass sit outside that number. The windshield is always separate. Any sunroof or panoramic roof is separate. On some models the small vent triangles ahead of the front doors are separate again, or bundled in silently depending on the shop.

This is where two quotes stop being comparable. A $249 ceramic package in Nashville and a $425 one in Pennsauken, New Jersey may be the same film over a different pane count, or the same count with different film. Ask for the count in writing.

Standard package against true full coverage

Most published "full coverage" ranges are the first row of this table, not the total. The add-ons get named, then left out of the headline number.

The spread across the ceramic column is wider than the entire dyed package. Bundling removal into the new install saves 10 to 20 percent against booking two separate visits.

Working out your own number

  1. Count the panes on your car and subtract any you are not doing.
  2. Multiply by $50 for carbon or $100 for ceramic to get a per-pane baseline.
  3. Add the windshield, the roof, and removal only if you are having them done.
  4. Add 25 to 40 percent if the vehicle is an SUV, van or truck.

That lands within about $100 of a real sedan quote, close enough to tell you whether a shop is high.

Why two quotes at the same shade differ by $300

The number on the film is a shade, and shade is not heat. XPEL publishes its full PRIME range on one specification sheet, which makes the point without anyone's marketing in the way. Here are three of its films, all sold as a "35."

Three films that look nearly identical through the window. The cheapest rejects 36 percent of total solar energy, the dearest 59 percent. Now read the last row against the one above it: XR Plus 35 is sold as 96 percent infrared rejection, while its rejection across the whole infrared band is 70 percent. Both numbers are on XPEL's own sheet, and the footnote explains the gap. "IR rejection data are reported at a singular wavelength, 1025nm."

The European Window Film Association, the IWFA's European chapter, defined the honest metric in a technical paper adopted in March 2021. Infrared runs from 780 to 2,500 nanometers, and IRER measures rejection across all of it. Selective IR rejection, SIRR, measures one wavelength or a narrow slice such as 900 to 1,000 nm. The IWFA created IRER because infrared specifications in this industry were being published without a standard behind them. The same paper puts the solar split at roughly 6 percent ultraviolet, 44 percent visible light and 50 percent infrared, which caps what any infrared claim can do for you.

Handheld meters at the counter make it worse. The EWFA paper says those devices generally read 800 to 1,400 nm or a single wavelength such as 940 nm, and that installers commonly test film on its own while manufacturers test it bonded to glass. Both shortcuts push the reading up. I spent several years filling domestic propane tanks against a plant gate that shut at a fixed hour, and the thing that stayed with me was odorant: it fades in a buried line, and it fades in a nose that has been breathing it since six in the morning. The demo box on the counter is that nose. It reports the part of the spectrum where the film is strongest and stays quiet about the rest.

One more line from the same sheet, before you pay for darkness. Across the XR Plus range, IRER holds flat at 70 percent from the 55 shade down to the 5 shade, while TSER climbs from 53 to 71 percent. Every point you gain by going darker comes from blocking visible light, none from infrared.

What VLT the meter will read on your car

Lower than the number printed on the film, always. The meter reads film and factory glass as one stack, and the result is close to the two percentages multiplied together. FMVSS No. 205, through the ANSI Z26.1 standard it incorporates, requires at least 70 percent luminous transmittance for glazing that is requisite for driving visibility on passenger cars, so factory front door glass sits between 70 and 80 percent before anything goes on it.

Run it: a 35 percent film over 75 percent factory glass measures about 26 percent. Florida Statute 316.2953 requires at least 28 percent on side windows and no more than 25 percent solar reflectance measured on the non-film side. That install fails, and the driver never sees a number that says 35 is illegal.

Behind the driver, Florida Statute 316.2954 sets 15 percent for a passenger vehicle and 6 percent for a multipurpose vehicle such as an SUV or van, with reflectance capped at 35 percent. A 20 percent film over 78 percent glass computes to about 15.6 percent. XPEL publishes a tolerance of plus or minus 3 percent on its transmittance values. That legal install is inside the tolerance band of the legal floor.

For the windshield, Florida Statute 316.2952 permits a transparent strip along the top so long as it does not encroach on the AS-1 portion defined in FMVSS No. 205. Florida names no height in inches. Other states substitute one: four inches in California, Colorado, Maine and Michigan, five inches or the AS-1 line in Texas, whichever is lower, six inches in New York. NHTSA's 2011 interpretation letter 11-000697 covers windshields carrying no AS-1 mark, where the strip must transmit at least 70 percent.

New Jersey is the outlier worth pricing into a quote. Under N.J.A.C. 13:20-33.7 a vehicle fails inspection with any added tint on the windshield or the windows immediately right and left of the driver, at any VLT. Rear glass is unrestricted with dual mirrors. A first offense under N.J.S.A. 39:3-74 carries a fine of up to $1,000, and the medical exemption certificate that permits front film runs 48 months.

What two windows cost, and why it isn't two-sevenths

Two front doors run $99 to $259 installed. That is more than two sevenths of a full-car price because the shop is selling an appointment, not glass area. The bay and the two hours cost the same whether you hand over two panes or seven, so per-pane rates fall as the count rises.

The harder problem is matching. New film beside four-year-old film will not agree, because the old panes have shifted and the new ones have not. If the car already wears dyed film on its way to purple, doing the fronts only guarantees a mismatch visible from the sidewalk. Price removing all seven and compare.

What removal adds, and why the back glass carries the risk

Budget $25 to $60 per side window, $80 to $175 for the rear defroster glass, and $150 to $250 flat for a full sedan. SUVs and wagons run $200 to $400.

The rear glass premium is not padding. The defroster grid is printed on the interior surface and film adhesive bonds directly to it, so peeling lifts conductive paint along with the film. Repairing a broken grid runs $200 to $500, and the paint kits fail often enough that shops treat replacement as the real fix, at $400 to well over $1,000 once antennas and sensors sit in the glass. Film baked on for eight to fifteen years is the worst case, dyed film worse still: the dye layer separates from the adhesive during the peel and leaves residue to be scraped.

Several shops will ask you to sign a defroster waiver before they start. Read it rather than skipping past it, then decide whether the back glass is worth $175 or whether the old film stays where it is.

What "lifetime" actually covers

The manufacturer's lifetime limited warranty covers cracking, peeling, bubbling, demetallizing and unusual color change. LLumar states its coverage in those terms and pays for removal, replacement and reinstallation at any dealer in the United States or Canada when a covered failure occurs.

Two exclusions decide whether it is worth anything. Ordinary fading is not a covered defect, so the slow drift a dyed film makes toward purple sits outside the claim until it crosses into "unusual." And the warranty is void where the installation breaks state law, which means a 20 percent front-side install in Florida costs you the ticket and the coverage together.

Transferability separates the tiers. FormulaOne's Classic, Pinnacle and Stratos lines transfer coverage with the vehicle title. Standard dealer-level coverage is tied to the original purchaser and that vehicle, with a warranty card and the original invoice required at claim time. If you resell every three years, that is the difference between a lifetime warranty and a three-year one.
